Tuesday, 11/29/2011 - REVISIONS & EDITING WORKSHOP

REVISIONS 

A. Look through the hard copy of your draft of the Policy/Proposal Paper and mark the following on the margins:
                description of the problem proving its importance (ideally, in the introduction)
                thesis statement outlining the proposal as a solution to the problem and its justification
                topic sentences in the paragraphs elaborating the justifications for the proposed solution

B. Hand in the hard copy with your notes to the instructor.

C. On your blog write your concerns about the paper and what you would like your peer reviewer to focus on.

D. E-mail the electronic version of the paper to your peer reviewer. Include the questions/concerns from your blog post into the message to your peer.

    Tuesday, 11/22/11 - revisions and preparing the portfolio

    I. CAMPUS ISSUE:
    Formulate a change/introduction of policy you feel the USC campus needs. Make clear if there is a policy in place that needs change or if there needs to be a policy that is currently lacking.
    Play Devil's Advocate: argue for the existing state of things. What is the motivation for the existing policy? Why have not the authorities introduced the policy for which you argued above?

    II. THE ISSUE FROM YOUR EXPLORATORY PAPER:
    Formulate the four perspectives you outlined in your Exploratory Paper. Which of the perspectives is dominant based on the current state of things? Why? What is the motivation/explanation for it? Which perspective do you think needs to be dominant? Why? How can the perspective of your choice be enforced as a policy?


    III. Discussion of responsible ways of documenting sources.

    IV. Feedback on conferences:

    • Rhetorical Analysis of  Visual Text 
    • Annotated Bibliography
    • Exploratory Paper

    V. Guidelines for the Portfolio.

    Tuesday, 11/15/2011- from exploratory to policy/proposal

    1. REVISIONS:

    • (How) did you change the draft of essay 3 between last Thursday and today? Did the analysis of sample student essay help you refine your paper? Did the peer comments help?
    • What do you find is the strongest element of your paper? Why?
    • What, if anything, are you concerned about? Why?
    2. PLANNING ESSAY 4:
    • Look back at your draft and list the 4 perspectives, copying the topic sentences from the draft. 
    • Now that you can start planning your essay 4, are you going to write a policy or proposal paper? What are you planning to propose?
    • Are you content with the research you have done (will you have enough useful sources for essay 4) or are you planning to do more research? Why?

    Review:

    What are the overlapping issues related to both factory farming and food industry?
    What are the exigent or potential problems, as discussed in the sources we have read/watched?
    Who are the stakeholders? What are their values? Whose voice have we not heard in the materials we have read or watched?
    What are the proposed alternatives or solutions to the problems? What has not been discussed yet?
    What could you research to have a more informed stand on the issue? What key words could you use?

    In-class writing assignment
    Look up  Caw Caw Creek Farm and City-Roots Farm. What information on their websites could help you in your research of the issue? How?
